If you're planning a trip to Japan and want something that’s more than just a train ride, the Sunrise Izumo is a delightful experience worth considering. I recently traveled from Tokyo to Izumo-shi in the Single Deluxe room, and it was such a memorable journey. This overnight sleeper train combines the romance of train travel with thoughtful modern touches, making it a perfect way to see Japan.
The Joy of the Sunrise Izumo
The Sunrise Izumo is one of the last remaining sleeper trains in Japan, and it has a charm that’s hard to put into words. From the moment I stepped aboard at Tokyo Station, I felt a sense of calm—a chance to leave behind the hustle of the city and settle into the rhythm of the rails.
The Single Deluxe room was a treat. It came with a comfortable bed, a small desk, and a sink—everything I needed to relax after a busy day. I even had my own little window to watch the world go by as the train meandered through Japan’s countryside. But the highlight of the ride? Without question, it was the shower.

A Shower Like No Other
The Sunrise Izumo’s shower is one of those experiences you don’t expect on a train, and yet it ends up being unforgettable. Here’s why:
The Challenge of Six Minutes
You get six minutes of water, and there’s a little timer to keep track. At first, I thought it might be stressful, but it turned out to be fun. There’s a rhythm to it—turning the water on and off as you soap up and rinse. Six minutes may not sound like much, but it was more than enough for a refreshing cleanse.
A Simple Pleasure
There’s something about taking a shower while the train gently rocks you back and forth. It felt oddly luxurious. The water was just the right temperature, and stepping out, I felt completely revived. The fatigue of the day was washed away, and I was ready to enjoy the rest of the ride.
3 Impeccably Clean
For a shower on a train, it was incredibly well-maintained. Everything was spotless, with enough space to change and organize my things. It’s such a thoughtful addition to the journey—one that makes you feel cared for.

Booking Tips
The Sunrise Izumo is popular, so booking in advance is essential. The Single Deluxe room, where I stayed, is in high demand, as are the Nobi-Nobi seats, which are a more affordable option. If you're traveling during peak seasons or on weekends, I recommend securing your tickets as early as possible.
Why This Train?
The Sunrise Izumo is so much more than a way to get from Tokyo to Izumo-shi. It’s an experience in itself. You get to sleep comfortably while the train carries you to your destination, and waking up to the soft light of dawn illuminating the countryside is magical. There’s also the added bonus of saving a night’s stay at a hotel—practical and delightful all at once.
Izumo-shi itself is worth the trip, especially if you’re visiting the famous Izumo Taisha Shrine. But for me, the journey on the Sunrise Izumo was just as special as the destination.

Would I Recommend It?
Absolutely. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or it’s your first time exploring Japan, the Sunrise Izumo offers a rare opportunity to slow down and savor the journey. It’s not just about getting from one place to another—it’s about enjoying the little moments along the way, like the soothing rhythm of the train, a cozy room to call your own, and, of course, that unique six-minute shower.
If you’re considering this trip, I encourage you to give it a try. The Sunrise Izumo is a reminder of how wonderful train travel can be—an adventure and a retreat, all in one.
